Cass County Jail Overview

Cass County Jail, also called the Cass County Detention Center, is operated by the Cass County Sheriff's Office. The jail building is listed at 300 Minnesota Avenue W in Walker, while the Sheriff's Office public address is 301 Minnesota Avenue W. Both sit in the county government block near the courthouse. The jail is a Minnesota local adult detention facility under Rule 2911, which means state jail standards govern intake, classification, visitation, safety checks, inspections, and emergency planning.

The jail holds adult men and women. Its main population includes pretrial detainees, people arrested on warrants, court-ordered commitments, and sentenced inmates serving up to one year. Cass County also uses Huber work-release and Sentence to Service options when a court and the Sheriff's Office authorize them. Those programs do not turn the facility into a state prison. A sentenced person committed to the Minnesota Department of Corrections is searched through the MNDOC locator, not through the Cass County Jail roster.

Cass County Jail Capacity

Cass County's inmate population story is tied to capacity. The county describes the jail as a 60-bed facility and says it is running above maximum capacity. The 2024 Minnesota DOC inspection report lists the same 60 secure coed approved beds but calculates 48 operational beds because the facility is rated at an 80 percent operating percentage. The inspection approved authority to operate from September 1, 2024, through August 31, 2026, on biennial inspection status.

Cass County also contracts with Itasca County for jail beds. A Cass County inmate can still appear in the Cass County Jail Register even when the person is physically housed at Itasca County Jail. The register includes an "Itasca Jail? Housed at" field, so that flag should be read as a physical-location clue. It does not mean the case stopped being a Cass County matter.

Look Up Cass County Jail Inmates

The official lookup path for current Cass County Jail custody is the Cass County Jail Register PDF, reached from the county jail page. The PDF inspected on June 18, 2026, was titled "Jail Register-Web2" and contained 32 total records across nine pages. It is free, requires no login, and lists current custody records rather than a historical booking archive.

Because the roster is a PDF, the search method is simple but not the same as a database. Open the file, use the browser or PDF find tool, and search by last name first. If the name is common, search by first name or city. Then read the whole entry, including charges and the Itasca housed field. The roster does not show mugshots, bond amounts, court dates, booking numbers, housing pods, or release dates, so those items require a records, court, or jail contact.

Cass County Jail Visits

Cass County publishes separate in-person visitation windows for male and female inmates. Visits have a minimum length of 15 minutes, with longer visits possible if time permits. The jail page does not publish parking rates, transit details, locker rules, or a full dress code, so visitors should call before travel when the visit involves evening hours, special needs, or a long drive to Walker.

Minnesota jail standards require visitor identification procedures, and the research file notes that visitors should bring government photo ID. A visit may be affected by classification, housing assignment, discipline, lockdown, court movement, medical status, or an Itasca housing flag. If the roster shows the person housed at Itasca, confirm the visit site before leaving for the Cass County Jail building.

Cass County Jail Mail

It does state that books, notes, letters, newspapers, magazines, and personal property cannot be dropped off without Jail Administration permission.

Cass County Jail Programs

Huber work release is available when approved by the court and the Sheriff's Office. Cass County lists the Huber cost as $140 per week, paid in advance. Work is limited to a maximum of 50 hours and no more than six consecutive days. Huber is not the same as bond. It is a custody program that lets an eligible inmate leave for approved work while still serving a jail sentence or court-ordered custody period.

Sentence to Service is also documented by Cass County. In that program, inmates volunteer for governmental or nonprofit community projects and receive sentence or fine reduction rather than wages. The county page says programming is provided for all inmates, while 2025 planning material noted that staffing and space limits affect programming options. A person seeking program eligibility should not assume the roster proves eligibility. Classification, court orders, discipline, and jail staffing can affect access.

Cass County Jail Lookup Limits

Cass County Jail Oversight

The Minnesota Department of Corrections inspects local adult detention facilities under Minn. Stat. 241.021 and Minnesota Rule Chapter 2911. The 2024 inspection kept Cass County Jail on biennial status but noted corrective items.
